What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Modern car keys come with unique chips that are unique to each vehicle, unlike older keys. This prevents thieves from simply taking the key and putting it in the car.

They are usually purchased from a dealership or copied by a locksmith. The method of programming the key differs by manufacturer and involves turning the key to the on position, without triggering the engine, and then removing it after a specific time period.

Transponder Codes

As its name suggests, transponders send out an encoded signal containing a four-digit number code when it is being questioned by air traffic control. Air traffic control can often instruct a pilot "squawk the ident". This is a directive for the pilot to press the IDENT button on their transponder. The ident button causes the aircraft to blink on the ATC's radar screens and allows them to easily distinguish your airplane on the screen.

There are 63 discrete codes that can be assigned to aircrafts although there are certain reserved codes that prohibit the use of a specific code in areas of high traffic or for emergencies. The discrete code block configuration is dependent on statistical analysis to limit the possibility of two aircraft with the same SQUAWK code being within the same sector.

A transponder keys contains an individual chip that holds the ID code. If a car's security light comes on, this means that the ID code inside the key isn't matching the code on the vehicle's computer. The car's immobilizer will be disabled and it will not start without another key. To prevent this from happening, Pop-A-Lock recommends that customers purchase only new transponder keys or get a professional locksmith such as ours cut them for them.

PIN Codes

A PIN code is a series of numbers (usually 4 or 6 digits), which are used to gain access to the device, service, or system. For example, a smart phone has a PIN code that is set by the user when they purchase the device. The user must enter this code every time they want to use it. PIN codes are used to safeguard ATM and POS transactions[1Secure access control (doors computers, cars),[2] and internet transactions.

While a longer PIN code might appear to be more secure but there are ways to hack or guess the PIN code as short as four digits. It is recommended that the PIN should be at least six digits in length, using a mix of numbers and letters, to ensure greater security. Certain OEMs also require PIN codes for the aftermarket key programmer to ensure security to prevent unauthorised users from stealing data from the modules.

VIN Numbers


VIN numbers are used to identify vehicles and provide the most extensive information about them. VIN numbers are unique to every vehicle on earth with the exception of alien cars (or whatever). The 17 digits of the VIN code are a mixture of numbers and letters that can be decoded in order to reveal crucial information about your car or truck.

Modern cars are digital libraries that hold an abundance of information regarding their history and the specifications. A VIN number is the key to unlock this information that allows you to discover everything from whether your vehicle has been in a recall to how many times it's been owned by different owners.

Each VIN number contains a different piece of information. The first digit, for instance is the type of vehicle the car is, like a passenger car, pickup truck or SUV. The second digit identifies the manufacturer. The third digit is the assembly division of the vehicle. The fourth through eighth numbers indicate the model type, restraint systems type and body type, as well as the engine and transmission codes. The ninth digit serves as a check digit in order to prevent fraud. It confirms that the VIN is not altered.

In North America, the 10th through 17th digits of the VIN code are called the Vehicle Identification Section or VIS. The tenth and 11th digits indicate the year of manufacture.
